MasjidFinder — Privacy Policy

How we handle your information

Last updated: 8 July 2026

Introduction

MasjidFinder ("we", "our", "the app") helps you find nearby masjids, view prayer times, get directions, find the Qibla, and receive community alerts such as janaza (funeral prayer) notifications. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices. By using MasjidFinder you agree to this policy.

Information we collect

Account information

If you create an account, we collect your email address and a securely hashed password (handled by Google Firebase Authentication — we never see your raw password). You can also use the app as a guest, in which case an anonymous device identifier is created so basic features work.

Location

With your permission, we use your device's precise location to: show masjids near you, enforce distance rules for posting/voting, point you toward the Qibla, and subscribe your device to janaza notifications for masjids near you. This happens on your device — we do not upload or store your location on our servers. Who receives a nearby janaza notification is decided on each device by what it has subscribed to, not by sending us your position. You can disable location access any time in your device settings.

Notifications

If you allow notifications, we register a push token (Firebase Cloud Messaging) so we can deliver alerts. Your device subscribes itself to notification "topics" for the masjids you follow (join) and masjids near you, and receives approved janaza alerts, announcements, and prayer-time updates for those masjids. You control this in the app's settings with the "Janazas near me" (nearby janaza alerts, about 3 km) and "Announcements near me" (nearby announcements and prayer-time changes, about 2 km) toggles, and you can turn off notifications entirely in your device settings.

Content you submit

Information you add — such as masjids, prayer times, janaza alerts, announcements, and votes — is stored and, once approved by the community, is visible to other users of the app. When you submit a new masjid, you also upload a photo of the prayer-time board/clock for verification; this photo is visible only to our administrators for review and is deleted once the masjid is approved or rejected. Each submission and vote is linked to your account identifier so posts can be traced for moderation, and posting/voting requires a verified-email account. Please do not submit private or sensitive personal information about others without consent.

How we use your information

How your information is shared

Data retention

We keep account and content data while your account is active or as needed to provide the service. Janaza alerts and similar time-limited items expire automatically. You may request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us (below).

Your choices

Security

We rely on Google Cloud / Firebase security, encrypted connections, database access rules, and app-integrity checks (Firebase App Check) to protect your data. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect it.

Children

MasjidFinder is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will remove it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the app means you accept the updated policy.
